“To work or not to work?”

To work or not to work is not the question. If we think we will not do works we are wrong. That is not even the issue. The question is: “Where is your faith?” Because if your faith is properly placed you will produce proper works. Proper works will produce fruit. In Matthew it talks about ways people who have had seeds sown in their lives produce works. How they respond to the seed sown will determine if they produce the fruit.

Matthew 13:1-23

4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Some will do works as a check list. I read my 5 minutes, I prayed 30 minutes, I gave my thiths… They only do what is on their list. They do not produce true fruit. After they do their check list the rest of the time they do what they want to do. When a check list is being done there is no growth and no evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit. They do not understand what God’s plan is. They look at the law, rules, and they do not see the Master plan. They do because they are told to do. So the seed that was sown is quickly taken away from them by the evil one. They try to sanctify themselves by what they do. Their focus is good works.

5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Some will do works to please others. They will do it what ever way they are told to do it. They are nice people, but look to men for approval. They are looking to a person to get them through. They might have some growth, but there is no root to hold the nutrients to help produce proper works. The growth they have is not long lived. The heart is willing, but the flesh is weak. They want to do, but have no power to carry out it out. They have no power to produce the right kind of fruit. They have no root. No foundation to sustain the growth needed to produce fruit. They want to perform. They become offended when anyone points out their need to get some roots. Oh am I not doing well? I am doing everything you told me to do? They fall away because they are offended. Their focus is self.

7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Some will do works and receive the word of the Cross, but the outside circumstances and business of life choke out the word they received. They hear the word but they allow people and things to drown the fruit that would come out if they would not let what they are going through choke the word. They want to and do what they are told. But if they would not focus on the cares of the world, they would see growth. They look at the process and allow things to choke out what would help them grow. Their focus is the world.

8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Some get the message of the Cross and with the heart they believe what Jesus did there. They have received the message and they allow the Holy Spirit to work in there life to produce the work of the Lord in their lives. Their focus is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. They will produce proper works, because proper faith will produce the proper works. They hear the word and understand it. They will grow in grace. Their focus is properly place in Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Can there be a change in those who have the right focus? Yes! How? PREACH THE WORD!! PREACH THE CROSS!! Stop doing activities that do not point them to the right focus. You should not be their focus. The work should not be their focus. Worldly things should not be their focus. JESUS CHRIST is the only focus that will produce fruit. We are not to show them how to do good things. We should show them what the word says about Jesus. All the word points to Jesus and what He did at the Cross for us. PREACH THE CROSS!!!!!
